2014 Awards

The Corporation presented awards at the Annual Awards Reception on December 8, 2014 at the Grand Historic Venue.

Awardees

14-Clyburn The Arthur W. Machen, Jr. Award was presented to Hon. Ben C. Clyburn, retired chief Judge of the District Court of Maryland. Judge Clyburn has provided significant leadership on behalf of low-income Marylanders, including helping to create the District Court Self-Help Center in Glen Burnie to provide access to the courts. The Benjamin L. Cardin Distinguished Service Award was presented to Alyssa R. Fieo, director of legal advocacy at Maryland Disability Law Center, and to Sharon E. Goldsmith, executive director of the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland. For over 20 years, Ms. Fieo’s professional career has been distinguished by her dedication to students with disabilities. Ms. Goldsmith has dedicated the majority of her 30-year legal career to promoting equal access to justice by developing and facilitating organized pro bono services. Right Photo Top: Alyssa R. 14-Coleman14-Conway The William L. Marbury Outstanding Advocate Award was presented to Barbara A. Coleman, senior paralegal of Maryland Legal Aid, and Neal T. Conway, executive director of Community Legal Services of Prince George’s County. A veteran of 37 years at Legal Aid, Ms. Coleman represents the poor and elderly in Howard County in hearings for public benefits and housing terminations. Mr. Conway began his second career 20 years ago as an intake paralegal and soon became executive director and expanded the organization’s budget, staff and services throughout the diverse community. The Herbert S. Garten Public Citizen Award was given to Brown, Goldstein & Levy, LLP, for its demonstrable commitment to low-income Marylanders and equal access to justice since its founding more than 30 years ago.
