Governor Appoints New MLSC Board Member

????????????????????????????????????April 8, 2016, Baltimore, MD – Governor Larry Hogan has appointed Sidney A. Butcher of Anne Arundel County to the Maryland Legal Services Corporation’s nine-member Board of Directors.

Of Counsel at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston LLP in Baltimore, Mr. Butcher practices business litigation and white collar defense and was formerly Assistant State’s Attorney for Baltimore City.  He serves on the Executive Council of the Bar Association of Baltimore City and is co-chair of the Maryland State Bar Association’s Judicial Appointments Committee, a member of the Budget and Finance Committee and a member of the Criminal Law and Practice Section Council. Mr. Butcher is also on the Special Committee for the Leadership Academy and a former Fellow. In addition, he is Past President of the Monumental City Bar Association, Baltimore’s oldest and largest specialty bar association. At a national level, he is a member of the ABA House of Delegates and serves as a member of the ABA Criminal Justice Section Council.

Mr. Butcher received the Baltimore City Bar Association’s President’s Award and the Government and Public Interest Lawyer of the Year Award. He is a graduate of Florida A & M University and the University of Kansas School of Law.

MLSC was established by the Maryland General Assembly in 1982 to receive and distribute funds to nonprofit organizations that provide civil legal assistance to low-income persons. From its inception, MLSC has made grants totaling over $200 million to help provide services in more than 2 million legal matters for Maryland’s families in areas of family, housing, consumer, employment, health care and other civil legal matters.
